| Gypsum is an active material able to uptake and release moisture. In its natural form gypsum contains crystalline water and in the production of gypsum plasterboard water is also used. During gypsum board production, porosity is built into the board, allowing moisture to penetrate the material. The porosity of the gypsum plasterboard is what enables it to take up and release water, albeit slowly. This ability increases as the moisture load (or deficit) increases and gypsum thereby acts as a buffer against humidity fluctuations. Since the alkaline properties of gypsum simultaneously increase in the process, it also counters micro fungal and similar fouling, which is typically widespread at high humidity. |
